How I know he cares:
During our 5-mile walk to Crissy Field and back yesterday afternoon, we walked hand-in-hand by a coffee cup perched precariously on the wall separating the sidewalk from the bay.
“If that tips over into the water it will end up in the Pacific Trash Vortex and choke some bird, ” I said.
In response, he picked it up and searched for the nearest trash can.
How I know he really, really cares:
Another glance at the cup revealed no coffee stains on the plastic lid…only a suspiciously yellow liquid.
It appeared that Basil was carrying a cupful of homeless pee. Had I been the one carrying it I probably would have shrieked, thrown it into the sea and done a heebie-jeebie dance.
He walked stoically on, though there was, as yet, no trash can in sight.
How I know I love him:
Cup o’ Pee finally and safely deposited in the trash, we returned to our oceanside walk.
I had inadvertently left my hand sanitizer at home. For a second I hesitated and considered his possibly pee-splashed hand, before reaching out to take it in my own.
I may be a germophobe, but I’m married to a man overflowing with kind-heartedness and caring for the world and its denizens.
I talk but he walks the talk, and that’s one of the many reasons why I love him.
My cup overfloweth, alhamdolillah.
[And, we both made sure to scrub our hands really well when we got home!]
